An application letter has one job and one job only and that is to get the employer to look at your resume. An application letter is a type of cover letter that you would send with your resume when applying for a job. Essentially it is like the opening act before your resume takes the stage. There are some things you should follow when writing your application letter.

First, the application letter should be short and to the point. There is no reason why your application letter should be more than two to three paragraphs long and there is no reason whatsoever that it should be longer than a page. If an employer comes across an application letter that is longer than a page, chances are they will not even read it. The whole point of this application letter is to sell yourself, your resume and get you the interview. Keep it short and remember to stay focused on why the employer needs to look at your resume.

The first paragraph in your application letter is usually your introduction. This is where you tell the employer why you are applying for the job and what you can bring to their table. It is not a bad idea to throw in a little bit of information about the company to show that you have done some research. You do not need to write in the application letter where you saw their job opening; most employers do not care where you heard about the position. They just want to know if you match the position.

The second paragraph of your application letter should be the highlights of your resume. Keep in mind these should only be highlights that pertain to the job you are applying for. You do not need recap your whole resume ,only give the key points. It is not necessary to mention how you answered a 16 line switchboard if you are this applying for a sales position but you can point out if you helped increase sales in one quarter. This shows your initiative. The very last part of your application letter is where you thank them for their time and you sign your name.

It is time to write a resume or update one. It all seems so overwhelming. Follow the 7 easy steps below and it will lead you right through the process. The whole process of how to write a resume begins with your assessment of yourself.

Write a Resume Step 1.

Which style fits you? Do you have a steady solid work history? Or are you entering the job market for the first time. Maybe you were once in the workforce, but have been home with children. Now it’s time to reenter the job market.

To write a resume, first pick one of the following styles.

Solid, consistent work history – Chronological Resume Style (you can also use a combo if you want)

Entering the job market for the first time – Functional Style or Combination Style

Re-entering the job market – Functional Style or Combination Style

Changing Industries – Functional Style or Combination Style

Spend some time online analyzing the different resume styles. To write a resume in the functional style is probably least effective, so use the Chronological Work History (starting with your most recent job first) or the Combination Style. The combination style allows you to show off your skills and minimize your work history record. In today’s fast paced world where you resume gets maybe 20 seconds, the Summary of skills right up front has a better chance of getting you

noticed.

Write a Resume Step 2.

Find resume samples that are appropriate to your industry. Decide which ones you like. Now analyze why you like them. Look at the words they use, look at how the person has sold themselves. Notice the action words and power words in the descriptions. Notice that the candidate is showing the potential employer how they will bring value to the position and the company.

Now it’s your turn to write a resume summary. Note your achievements and accomplishments. Do a search online for action words and power words. High School Resume

So you think high school might be a little too early to start thinking about a resume? Do you think that you do not need to worry about a resume until you are a college grad and ready to begin your search for a full time job? You might want to reconsider. As a high school student you need a resume just as much as college students do. You need a resume to get a part time job and more importantly you need a resume to help you get into college. It is becoming more and more common for college recruiters to request a resume to see a brief summary of your abilities, and experience, not to mention education.

What should you included in your high school resume? For starters cover the basics such as your name, address, phone number, cell number and your email address. Something to keep in mind about your email address is that is should be a professional sounding email address. If your email address is cutiepatoey24@yahoo.com, you might want to consider opening up a second free email address using the first initial of your first name and your last name.

It is also important for a high school resume to have an objective. If this is a resume for a college, you would state what your objective is to “obtain a degree at such and such college”. An even better objective on a high school resume would be to state what kind of degree you would like to obtain, but not high school students go to college ready to declare a major. For a part time job, you could simply write “to obtain a part time position with company xyz”

The next thing to add in your high school resume is your education. Make sure your resume included your GPA especially if it is a 3.0 or higher. It is also a good idea under this heading to list any awards, honors or special recognition you have received. If you have been on the honor roll, you want to make sure you mention that. If you won any academic awards, here is the place to mention it.

The fourth heading should be experience. Now this heading could be a very simple section on a high school resume, especially if you have little work experience. If you do not have any work experience, you can list class projects that you may have worked on and what you have learned from them. Otherwise you can skip this section all together. This is a big difference between a high school resume and a career resume. On a career resume your work experience could be vital to your job, while on a high school resume it is not as important as say your education or your extracurricular activities.

So let’s talk about the extracurricular activities. This is a very important section when it comes to a high school resume that is geared toward college recruiters. Extracurricular activities are becoming almost as important as GPA when it comes to getting into a college. You want to make sure you list any extracurricular no matter what they are. This is the one place where you can really show your uniqueness.

Lastly, make sure your high school resumes contains some references or at least your resume says “references available upon request” if you do not feel comfortable putting names and numbers down on your resume.
