Resume Help
|
| You only get one chance to make a first impression so give yourself the advantage a professional resume provides. |
If you have spent a lot of time creating the perfect resume and have sent it to a few local employers but are still not getting results, what else can you do to help yourself find a job? Where can you find companies to submit your resume to? Will it take a lot of time to send your resume? Is there an easier way then to mail your resume to individual companies then to just do it one by one? What about the cost of postage, especially if no one responds to your cover letter or resume?
These are all legitimate questions I've been asked in my 20+ years as an executive recruiter / career counselor. You can use the traditional methods of target marketing on your own. Go to your local library and research the companies in your area or access that information on line. Make a list of the companies you would want to work for. Call into those companies and ask them for the name of the person who would be managing the department that you want to work in.
For example: You are an accountant working for a CPA firm, but you want to get more into the corporate world. You would call into the companies you have listed and ask for the name of the Corporate Controller or the Director of Internal or External Audit, logically thinking of the title of the person you would be reporting to. Then you write directly to that person instead of going through the HR department. You then compose a cover letter and send that along with your resume to each of the companies you have called into.
If you are thinking of relocating though, the process is the same. Identify the areas of the country you want to relocate to, look up companies in your area of interest and get on the phone or look up each company's web site to glean names.
There is another way to go about finding new employers and networking. You can have someone else do it for you. There are companies who will submit your resume for you . There is a cost in using a resume submission service, however, it is extremely reasonable when you factor in the cost of postage and paper and the biggest factor, your time.
A good resume submission service will save for you in all three areas. I have researched quite a few submission services as a career counselor and by far, hands down, the one that I recommend is a company called Resume Spider. Resume Spider does targeted marketing for you. You have control over what you need to do and want to do, and once you choose, everything is done at the click of a mouse. I won't go into what they offer because you can find that information on their web site.
